Nestlé has scored a victory in the coffee wars as the European Patent Office upheld a patent that protects the Nespresso coffee system from compatible capsules made by other companies. The three Nestlé rivals - Sara Lee of US, Switzerland's Ethical Coffee and Italy's Casa del Caffè Vergnano - can challenge the decision at the patent office's court of appeal, whose decision is final.
