Italy-based illycaffè, roaster of quality espresso coffee, has opened the fifth edition of its India Coffee Quality Prize for Espresso is open for participation. The company has been conducting the 'Coffee Quality Award' in India for the last four years, awarding citations and cash prizes as well as Certificates of Merit.

"Starting this year, in addition to the 7,000 dollar prize money, the winner will be awarded a visit to the illy headquarters in Trieste Italy, giving him an opportunity to learn more about the quality standard and how to get better yield from the crop," illycaff Chairman and CEO Andrea Illy said.

The company has been buying green coffee from India for over six years and Indian coffee now compared well in taste and organolectic characteristics with that produced in Brazil and other parts of the world, he added.

The illycaff India Coffee Quality Prize is modelled on the decade-and-a-half old Brazilian Quality Award, also instituted and administered by illycaff, which revolutionised the coffee economy of that country, the release added.
