illycaffè, a leading roaster of Espresso coffee, which gave away prizes to the winners of its sixth annual India Coffee Quality Prize for Espresso, here recently.
In the contest, which opened in January, M.P. Shantha of Bettadamalali Estate in Chikmagalur stood first and A.N. Devraj of Nagambika Estate, Chikmagalur, was awarded the second prize. The Sixth India Coffee Quality Prize for Espresso carries an award of $7,000 for the winners and a trip-for-two to Trieste where the winners will visit illycaffè production facilities.
“In the six years of the competition held in India, there has been a substantial improvement in the quality of coffee being produced and submitted for the competition.
The samples received have been of very high quality and conform to the high standards set by illycaffè,” said Anna Illy Jr., member of the Board of Directors.
“Participation by local growers in the initiatives undertaken by UniversitÀ del caffè (university of coffee) is resulting in superior quality of green coffee being grown in the region,” said Roberto Morelli, manager, UniversitÀ del caffè.
“Our intent is to help the producer understand the intrinsic quality of his coffee produce,” he added.
