Sara Lee partners with Marata for coffee roasting

Sara Lee has stroke an agreement with Marata group, the 3rd largest coffee roaster in Brazil aiming to expand its sales in the Northeast region. Marata would industrialise, package and distribute Sara Lee products in the region, but Sara Lee denies the deal is a step towards acquiring Marata.Sara Lee has stroke an agreement with Marata group, the 3rd largest coffee roaster in Brazil aiming to expand its sales in the Northeast region. The US company stepped in Brazil in 1997 acquiring the brands Cafe do Ponto and Seleto and in 2000 acquired the brands Uniao, Pilao and Caboclo. Marata runs a roasting plant at Itaporanga D' Ajuda (Sergipe) and Sara Lee is to have control on the production and distribution of its brands; the business model was successfully adopted in Rio de Janeiro via a partnership with Socan. Created 50 years ago and under family control & management, Marata operates for over 25 years in the coffee business. It has operations in orange juice that accounts for 15% of the R$500mil estimated turnover.
